Socioeconomic effects

Through our activities we contribute to the hospitality industry and local trade, while making Uppsala an attractive city in which to live and work, as well as visit.

UKK has an impact on tourism and trade

In 2011, HUI Research conducted a comprehensive investigation into the significance of UKK to the development of Uppsala. The investigation resulted in a report that was published in the same year: Monetary and catalytic effects of Uppsala Konsert & Kongress.

In summary, the report showed that Uppsala Konsert & Kongress (Uppsala Concert Hall and Conference Centre) is of major importance to tourism in Uppsala.  UKK contributes both directly and indirectly to approximately 8 per cent of the total tourism turnover in the Municipality of Uppsala. In the report, almost every tenth tourist dollar spent in Uppsala was derived from UKK activities. In 2010, UKK tourism visitors consumed approximately SEK 93 million in Uppsala outside the UKK facilities, primarily in the form of overnight stays in hotels and visits to restaurants and cafés.  The investigation also showed that retail and restaurant operations in the immediate area have increased their annual turnover since the opening of Uppsala Konsert & Kongress.

Retention of purchasing power and increased occupancy

In addition the report showed that UKK contributes to the retention of purchasing power. This means that to an increasing extent, the residents of Uppsala are choosing to attend specific events at home instead of those in another area. A significant proportion of the residents of Uppsala (42-53 per cent in the report) state that they would have travelled to another place nearby in order to attend a specific event if it hadn’t been held in Uppsala. An extended range of culture and experiences makes Uppsala a more attractive place to live.  In this way, UKK also helps attract and retain local knowledge to the city.

How do culture and the hospitality industry work together?
