Otherworldly: A Way in Untilled – Pierre Huyghe

Konstnären Pierre Huyghe är en föregångare i utforskandet av relationen till det mer-än-mänskliga. I stället för objekt föreslår han hela miljöer som definieras av en långsam förvandling över tid, och som i sig liknar en slags levande varelse.  

A Way in Untilled (2012) filmades i en park i tyska Kassel, på en övergiven och obrukad (untilled) plats. Filmen visar olika processer av förruttnelse och tillblivelse, och ger plats för icke-mänskliga aktörer och oförutsedda händelser. De ”äventyr” och den utveckling vi ser utgör ett mikro-universum av en komposteringsträdgård, men ur de icke-mänskligas perspektiv; det är deras omvärld – umwelt – den de själva upplever utifrån sina egna sinnesförnimmelser.  

Även om vi bara ser en kringströvande hund, som heter ”Human”, så dyker det också upp andra varelser: bin, gnagare, insekter, livsformer i jorden och i vattnet, både djur och växter. Konstnären valde att lämna dess varelser i fred på en minimalt förberedd plats. Det är just denna laissez-fair, det vill säga den låt-gå-mentalitet, som intresserar Huyghe, sättet som varje livsform utvecklar sig i det sammanhang den erbjudits. Huyghe skapade på så sätt bara verket till en del och kontrollerar inte dess möjligheter att förändras.  

Om konstnären

Pierre Huyghe (född 1962 i Paris) bor och arbetar i Santiago i Chile. Hans konst är internationellt omtalad och har visats i en stor mängd utställningar världen över. 

Huyghes arbeten kan betraktas som spekulativ fiktion, vilka ofta tar formen av processer som fortgår mellan intelligenta livsformer, biologiska som teknologiska. Tänjbar trög materia som lär, modifieras och utvecklas. 

Aktuella projekt som kan nämnas är: Chimeras, Emma – Esbo moderna konstmuseum, Variants, Kistefos Museum, Jevnaker (2022), After UUmwelt, Luma Foundation, Arles (2021); UUmwelt, Serpentine Gallery, London (2018), The Roof Garden, Metropolitan Museum, New York (2015). 2012–2014 turnerade Hugyhe med en stor retrospektiv till museerna Centre Pompidou (Frankrike), Ludwig Museum (Tyskland) och Los Angeles County Museum of Art (USA). Videoverket A Way in Untilled är en dokumentation av interventionen i Karlsruheparken på Dokumenta 13 i Kassel 2012.

Otherworldly: A Way in Untilled – Pierre Huyghe

The acclaimed video A Way In Untilled by French artist Pierre Huyghe is shown at UKK during the Otherworldly festival.

Pierre Huyghe has come to stand at the forefront of the exploration of our relationship to the more-than-human. Instead of objects, he proposes environments, characterised by an evolution over time which resembles that of a living being.

A Way in Untilled (2012) was filmed in a park in the German city of Kassel that had been abandoned, or “untilled”. It depicts processes of organic decomposition and generation, making room for non-human actors and contingencies. The “adventures” and developments describe this micro-universe of a compost garden from the perspective of non-humans; it is their Umwelt, the world that they perceive in function of their own sensory capacities.

Although we mainly see the meanderings of a dog called Human, other beings appear as well: bees, rodents, insects, forms of life on and in the soil and in the water, both animals and plants. The artist left these beings alone in this minimally prepared space. It is precisely this laissez-faire that interests Huyghe, the way in which each form of life unfolds in the context given to it. Huyghe created it only in part and does not control its potential for change.

About the artist

Pierre Huyghe (born in 1962, Paris) lives and works in New York, USA. His work is internationally known and presented in various exhibitions around the world.

The works of Huyghe are conceived as speculative fiction and often present themselves as continuity between a wide range of intelligent forms, biological, technological, tangible inert matter that learn, modify and evolve.

Recent exhibitions includeChimeras, Emma – Esbo modern art museum, Variants, Kistefos Museum, Jevnaker (2022), After UUmwelt, Luma Foundation, Arles (2021); UUmwelt, Serpentine Gallery, London (2018),The Roof Garden, Metropolitan Museum, New York (2015). In 2012 –2014, a major retrospective of Huyghe’s work traveled from the Centre Pompidou (France) to the Ludwig Museum (Germany) and to Los Angeles County Museum of Art (USA). A Way in Untilled is video documentation of the intervention in the Karlsruhe park at Documenta 13 in Kassel 2012.
