Peder Bjurmans verk Slow Walker visar ett mikroskopiskt björndjur (en trögkrypare) i en AR-installation på Vaksala torg, på den östra sidan av UKK. Den mystiska besökaren rör sig mitt ibland oss och är uppförstorad så den nästan fyller hela torget.

Om verket

Björndjur är extrema överlevare, som klarar kyla ned till den absoluta fryspunkten, extrem hetta och till och med vacuum i rymden. Genom en unik frystorkningsprocess kan de klara sig trettio år eller mer. Ändå är de känsliga för klimatförändringar som stör deras naturliga miljöer i våtmarker och mossor. De är minimala kämpar och märkliga varelser som rör sig mellan två världar, livet och döden. I verket blir de monumentala och skulpturala objekt i sig, men ändå flyktiga och efemära, som utomvärldsliga symboler.

Denna sociala och digitala skulptur visas med ett soundtrack av den hemlighetsfulle electronica-ikonen Abul Mogard och en voice-over som tillsammans för oss in i björndjurens svävande värld.

Om konstnären

Peder Bjurman (f. 1966) är konstnärlig ledare för Otherworldly. Han är även internationellt verksam som regissör och manusförfattare och visade videoverket The Air Loom på förra årets festival. Hans verk har bland annat visats i New York, London, Mexiko, Taiwan, Frankrike och i de nordiska länderna, och han samarbetar med ett flertal framstående konstnärer på det internationella fältet.

Otherworldly: Slow Walker – Peder Bjurman

Giant tardigrades take over Vaksala torg as we show Peder Bjurman’s AR installation Slow Walker during and after the Otherworldly festival.

The Slow Walker project by Peder Bjurman aims to place microscopic tardigrades as gigantic AR-objects in the city square Vaksala torg, and make them visually present using geo-fencing and smartphones. The colossally enhanced creatures measure about 50×100 meters, and move extremely slow through the square, grazing and interacting with the audience as they come closer.

Tardigrades are microscopic survivors, capable of resisting extreme temperatures, from the absolute freezing point to extreme heat. They survive in space and can remain frozen for thirty years, resist vacuum and radiation through a chemical kind of suspended animation. Yet they are highly sensitive to climate change, when their environments are threatened due to a rise in temperatures in their natural habitats, wetlands and moss. They are resilient fighters in a microscopic format. Monumental, yet ephemeral creatures floating between life and death; as a symbol, as mystical beings, and as sculptural objects in their own. 

The digital artwork is accompanied by a soundtrack by the secretive electronica icon Abul Mogard and a voice over, providing an extra dimension to the highly social sculpture.

About the artist

Peder Bjurman (b. 1966), also artistic director of Otherworldly, mainly works internationally as writer and director. His video installation piece The Air Loom was shown at last years’ festival, and his work has been shown in New York, London, Mexico, Taiwan, France and the Scandinavian countries among others.
